Preparing Dinners for the Homeless in Huntington

On March 28,  Local Mission Ministries is sponsoring a “cook in” to prepare food for homeless people who will be spending the night at Central Presbyterian as part of the HIHI program. Just in case you were wondering what this program is all about, here is a brief  description of it that you might find helpful.

Several years ago, religious communities in the Huntington area decided to partner together to provide shelter and meals for homeless people during the cold winter months. With the support of the Family Service League, the Huntington Interfaith Homeless Initiative or “HIHI”, as it has become known,  was established.  To implement this program, host congregations  agreed to receive guests one night a week starting in  November and ending in  March.  Those congregations welcoming the homeless this year include Central Presbyterian, St. Patrick’s RC, Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, St. Elizabeth’s RC, the Unitarian Fellowship, Temple Beth El, the Huntington Jewish Center, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, St. Peter’s Lutheran at Camp Alvernia, and St. ParaskeviGreek Orthodox Church. Between twenty to thirty-five people are sheltered each night. Altogether, about twenty to thirty congregations participate in the program by preparing and delivering the meals that are served, by sending volunteers to the host churches or by donating to this program.

If you would like to help prepare lunch and dinner for homeless people on Monday, March 28, please E-mail Marilyn Fox at zorra2@optonline.net or write your name on the sign up sheet in the rear of the church in March.  Mission Ministries will provide the food, all that is needed is willing hands to prepare it and/or volunteers to deliver it.
